With the facilities at the campsite, and a dedicated staff team, everyone at Explorers is welcomed to the event ensured of a unique, thrilling week.
Everyone camps together under canvas and disabled campers and peer helpers are ‘buddied up’ – for the week at camp. Each is in charge of making sure their buddy is having a great time and that, if applicable, all their care needs are met. Of course, they soon become firm friends! The whole ethos of the camp is built on these relationships and the satisfaction of achieving and trying things that are new.
Explorers Camp has a dedicated staff team who oversee activities and make sure that every participant feels supported and can get their best out of camp. The team includes a full-time qualified nurse, along with a cooking team and activities team, all of whom have many years’ experience working with young people and delivering excellent personal care.
The on-site facilities include tracking and mobile hoists, fully accessible toilet and washing facilities, and a fully attended laundry. All our participants are given basic training in the facilities and manual handling, with the staff team always on hand to guide and assist. There is also an inside day room (we can’t promise it won’t rain!) and a cookhouse with a woodfire range and accessible food preparation area, all located in the main hub of the site.
Whatever your abilities and whatever your interests, Explorers Camp is sure to have something to excite and challenge you. Many activities are undertaken as part of a team, or ‘patrol’, and these will be your family for the week – sharing together in the fun activities, and also in the chores! Everyone will have a chance to prepare meals, wash up, take care of the site’s facilities, and cook on an open fire – not to mention our adventurous on site and outing activities: previous years have included sailing, ice-skating, zip wire, archery, trips to shopaholic heaven, and all-ability cycling. Each year the camp runs based on a different theme – and there’s always room for outrageous fancy dress on our annual party night!
Woodlarks is set in 12 acres of wonderful natural woodland – all of which has been adapted to be accessible, no matter what your sensory or mobility needs. Our activities will take you out in the woods to cook and to experience nature first-hand, and sharing these experiences in teamwork and friendship will be a key part of your week at Explorers.
